A Brief History of Lido Key

While we have mainly served Siesta Key in the past, we are so happy to be expanding our rental services into beautiful Lido Key! This incredible island offers a unique oasis in Florida, providing all the sun, sand, nature, food, and shopping you could want from your getaway.

Lido Key is a fascinating destination with a history to match, and you can clearly see historic influences in today’s world.

The History

Lido Key’s history can be traced to the early 1900s when its first property developer, Thomas Martin Worcester, arrived. Worcester spent three years constructing a palace on the island, garnering tons of media attention and alerting the public to this otherwise hidden spot. After passing through the hands of several other owners, Lido Key eventually found itself owned by John Ringling of Ringling Bros. Circus fame.

Ringling is widely credited with transforming Lido Key into the upscale destination it is today. He spent much time developing the island for new businesses, restaurants, art installations, and more. Though many developments didn’t last, Ringling’s taste and influence is still felt throughout the island and have contributed to today’s experience of Lido Key.

Lido Key Today

Today, Lido Key prides itself on serving as a private retreat for visitors and maintaining an upscale atmosphere that’s still accessible to everyone. Many celebrities have taken to this area with homes on Lido Key or nearby Siesta Key, or Sarasota. You may even spot a familiar face near our Lido Key vacation rentals!

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, writer Stephen King, and actress Jane Lynch are just a few of the stars with homes in the area.

Lido Key is near some of the most interesting attractions, so no matter what you’re looking for, it’s just down the street from our Lido Key or Siesta Key beach rentals. Be sure to spend a day on Lido Key Beach soaking up the sun, and head to Mote Marine Lab and Aquarium for an up-close look at local wildlife and the ongoing conservation efforts. Nature lovers will also enjoy Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, while St. Armands Circle is perfect to shop until you drop. You’ll also want to visit The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art for some history and culture.
