Where is Lido Key Located in Florida?

While many vacationers may stick to downtown Sarasota or Siesta Key, there is a bit of a secret right around the corner on Lido Key. It may be one of the most exemplary places to experience the isolated beaches of the Gulf Coast of Florida without needing to travel very far at all.

Introducing Florida’s Hidden Gem

Lido Key is a barrier island directly to the west of downtown Sarasota and St. Armands Key. It is located just north of Siesta Key.

This spectacular area provides pristine beaches often without the typical Florida crowds. You can also get a good dose of shopping, culture, nature, or whatever else you’re looking for in this perfect vacation destination.

How Do I Get There?

Lido Key and the city of Sarasota are connected by John Ringling Causeway, named for one-half of the duo famous for Ringling Brothers Circus (John was a Sarasota resident!).

This 3,100-foot bridge provides gorgeous views of the Sarasota Bay as you head back and forth between Sarasota and Lido Key. You can follow the main Ringling causeway for the most straightforward directions to Lido Key.

What Can I Do There?

Lido Key is the perfect destination for the family because there is something for everyone. Your Florida vacation will obviously include the beach, and Lido Key’s beaches are simply pristine. You can enjoy the tranquility of the ocean without being bothered by a huge crowd or obstructed views.

If you’re a nature lover, you’re in luck. Lido Key is known for its sunset cruises and eco-tourism.

There are many natural Lido Key things to do to keep your vacation going. Dolphin watching and deep-sea fishing are some of the area’s most popular activities.

Family-Friendly Activities

For example, Ken Thompson Park on adjacent City Island is 92 acres of gorgeous nature, offering bicycle trails, picnic facilities, hiking trails, and wildlife/bird watching. There’s also the famed Mote Marine Aquarium which is always worth multiple trips and is packed full of exciting marine life for all ages to appreciate.

You can also check out Ted Sperling Park at South Lido Beach. Here, waters converge from Sarasota Bay, Big Pass, the Gulf of Mexico, and Brushy Bayou. While the currents make this a “no swim” zone, it’s still a beautiful spot to have a picnic and let the kids enjoy the playground.

This park is also a hugely popular kayaking destination, with the mangrove tunnels being a stunning site to kayak through, and tours are in the clear, calm and shallow parts of the water in the area – without any alligators either!

Where to Eat

If you would rather dine and shop, you’ll want to visit St. Armand’s Circle. This shopping center is open daily for you to explore. Its shops, dining, and luxury spa options make it a great place to escape from the rest of the world. You’ll find everything from popular chain stores like Lily Pulitzer to smaller local boutiques like Michael’s on the Boulevard. St. Armand’s Circle is the perfect place for window shopping or to splurge on a souvenir to take home.

Of course, St. Armand also offers a wide variety of dining options. You can find classic Italian at Le Colonne Ristorante or Irish pub food at Lynches Pub and Grub. Plus, what’s dinner without dessert? From Ben and Jerry’s ice cream to Le Macaron’s French pastries, you can’t go wrong, and you won’t leave hungry.

History of Lido Key

If you’d like some history during your visit, you won’t be disappointed. St. Armand’s is home to the Circus Ring of Fame, honoring history’s most notable circus performers and contributors. Have your picture taken with plaques honoring visionaries John Ringling and P.T. Barnum or world-renowned animal trainer Gunther Gebel-Williams.

St. Armand’s also hosts a beautiful historic statue walk, filled with sculptures mimicking typical Greek and Roman art. Twenty-one new statues have been added to the originals, so statues here range anywhere from 10 to 100 years old!
